Your magazine has a new logo, is going to full colour printing and has a new subscription price
Great news from php|architect Headquarters—we're making some serious (and awesome) changes to our magazine!
Effective immediately, we have dropped the subscription price to a cool $29.99 ($39.99 outside Canada and the U.S.) for both print and PDF editions! That's a drop of as much as 70% from our old price—and a great opportunity to get the best PHP magazine on the market for as little as $0.08 a day (now, that's less than one cup of coffee every month!).
Sign up today for 12 issues of pure PHP goodness—visit our subscription page and save 50% over the regular cover price!
Note: because of the great difference between the new subscription price and the old, we have decided to provide all our current subscribers with an extension to their subscription equal to the old cost of the remaining issues in their account divided by the new price. As a result, this morning we gave away over 40,000 issues to our existing subscribers!
Also today we're launching a series of changes to our site's layout and functionality. In addition to a new, easier to read look and user-friendlier interface, we will be introducing a series of improvements over the coming weeks aimed at enhancing our user's experience.
Starting with the January 2009 issue, php|architect will move to a much-improved all-colour print format that will feature a new layout, better use of graphical elements and a richer selection of articles for each issue.
In addition, we're also making changes to our release schedule to improve delivery times and ensure that print copies reach our subscribers in a timely manner—or, at least, as timely as the postal service allows!
Finally, we are taking some serious steps to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. For starters, we are in the process of moving our printing facilities to Chicago, IL, where our distribution centre is, in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of our transportation costs. In addition, we will be printing on lighter, environmentally safe paper, thus further reducing transportation.
Thanks to all these changes, we expect the move to an all-print subscription model to be largely carbon-neutral, and will continue to work towards improving our environmental footprint over the next months.
Reducing a price is always a good idea from a customers point of view. I like the fact that you take the environmental impact into consideration. But the new layout is ugly, mixing orange menu with green background !!! That hurts. I liked the colours from the previous layout a lot more. There are are some issues with the layout that prevented me from posting this comment with safari. The 'post reply' link was not clickable (behind a layer ?). Notice also the difference between the same page in Safari and Firefox 3 . The forum was not accessible using Safari (layer again ?). Downloading the latest issue of php architect mixed up the layout as well. PS: I am using a macbook. PPS: While I was typing this the layout changed, the some of the pics were replaced with '?'. So I guess you are working on it.
MTA? C7Y? What is with all the non-familiar acronyms? As far as I know, the magazine I know and love is called PHP Architect. And, I'm always a little suspicious when the price drops to half and color printing is thrown in. Is there a new corporate sponsor we have to thank for all this?
MTA? C7Y? What is with all the non-familiar acronyms? MTA has been the publisher of php|architect since... there has been a php|architect. C7Y is our community site (from which you were posting your message). There are no corporate sponsors to thank. php|a is still published by the same people who published it before; we've just reached the point where we can offer it at a lower price. If you prefer, of course, I'd be happy to charge you the old price—maybe with a little surcharge thrown in... you know, just so you don't feel like you're being enslaved by shady corporate interests ;-)
Marco, While I welcome the free issues and the lower prices, I wonder how you can claim 'Moves to reduce environmental impact' when you are now printing hard physical copies for those previously on a PDF only subscription. Now you are not only shipping bits but atoms as well. It sounds like you have put a lot of thought into the logistics of this change but it would be great to have more detail about how this change is carbon-neutral. Thanks , Nigel
Hi Nigel, I posted a blog entry about this (among other things) just yesterday: http://mtabini.blogspot.com/2008/10/some-thoughts-on-phparchitect-relaunch.html Cheers, Marco
Fantastic Marco. Thanks for the feedback. Nigel
The "slideshow" on the phparch.com front page doesn't work in Opera. :(
